Liverpool



Liverpool (pop. 479,000), industrial city in northwestern England, one of its major ports, on the Mersey River, 3 mi (5 km) from the Irish Sea. The borough was chartered in 1207. In the 18th century it was a major slave-trading port. Food processing and chemicals are now important local industries.
