Lima

Lima (pop. 5,330,000), capital and largest city of Peru, about 8 mi (13 km) inland from the Pacific port of Callao. Founded in 1535, Lima was the chief residence of the Spanish viceroys. Earthquakes in 1687 and 1746 destroyed much of the city, but many old buildings remain. The University of San Marcos dates from 1551. Rapidly expanding, Lima now has many industries, including textiles, chemicals, oil refining, and food processing.
