Liberalism

Liberalism, political philosophy that stresses individual liberty and equality of opportunity. Classical liberalism developed in Europe in the 18th century as part of a rationalist critique of traditional institutions and a distrust of state power. Since the 1930s, modern liberalism has advocated state intervention in the economy but is still concerned with social issues such as civil rights and equality of opportunity.
