León, medieval kingdom of northwestern Spain, including the provinces of León, Salamanca, and Zamora. Forged in the 10th century by the rulers of Austria, the kingdom spearheaded the Christian reconquest of Spain from the Moors. It was permanently joined to Castile in 1230.
