Leicester, Robert Dudley, Earl of (1532–88), favorite of Elizabeth I of England. Although his political and military performances were poor and his reputation was marred by suspicions of treason, wife-murder and bigamy, he wielded great power and was made a privy councillor (1558) and army commander.
