La Rochefoucauld, François, Duc de, François, Duc de (1613–80), French writer. He is known for his Memoirs (1662) of the Fronde, and his Maxims (1665), a collection of more than 500 moral reflections and epigrams, generally paradoxical, often pessimistic, usually acute.
