Lake Peipus

Lake Peipus, or Chudskoe, lake in the former USSR between Estonia and Russia. It has depths up to 50 ft (15 m) and an area of 1,400 sq mi (3,626 sq km), and is frozen about 6 months out of the year. During World War II, when the Germans surrounded Leningrad and cut off all supply routes, Russian volunteers used small trucks to transport food across the thick ice to feed more than 3 million starving people.
