Lake District



Lake District, scenic region in northwestern England, about 30 mi (50 km) wide. It contains the highest mountain in England (Scafell Pike, 3,210 ft/978 m) and 15 lakes, including Windermere, Ullswater, and Derwentwater. William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, and Robert Southey are among the writers and artists who lived here in the early 19th century.
