Laissez faire



Laissez faire (French, “leave alone”), doctrine that opposes state intervention in economic affairs. First enunciated by the French physiocrats in the 18th century as a reaction against mercantilism, the idea was taken up by Scottish economist Adam Smith and became a cornerstone of classical economics.
