Sir Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine



LaFontaine, Sir Louis Hippolyte (1807–64), Canadian politician and judge. Leader of the French Canadians from 1837 and twice joint prime minister with Robert Baldwin (in 1842–43 and 1848–51, when the “great ministry's” legislation included the Rebellion Losses Bill). He was chief justice of Lower Canada from 1853–64.
