L

L, the 12th letter of the English alphabet. It is derived from the Semitic lamedh (perhaps itself based on an Egyptian hieroglyphic), representing an oxgoad, and from the Greek lambda. In Roman numerals, L is 50. The British symbol for the pound sterling (£) is another form of the letter, derived from the Latin libra, originally a pound in weight.
