Kuybyshev



Kuybyshev, now known as Samara (pop. 1,300,000), city in east-central European Russia, located on the Volga River. It is an important port and industrial center, where automobiles, locomotives, and aircraft are manufactured. It is also the site of a hydroelectric power plant. Founded as Samara in 1586, renamed in 1935. In 1991 the name reverted back to Samara.
