Paul Klee



Klee, Paul (1879–1940), Swiss painter, graphic artist, and art theorist. From 1906, he exhibited with the German expressionist Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) group. He taught at the Bauhaus 1920–31, publishing a textbook on painting (Pedagogical Sketchbooks, trans. 1944). Sensitive line, color, and texture are combined in Klee's paintings with wit and fantasy: Landscape with Blue Birds (1919), Jorg (1924), and Diana (1931).
