Kitchener



Kitchener (pop. 356,400), Canadian cultural and industrial city 65 mi (105 km) west of Toronto. Named Berlin in 1830 and populated by German immigrants, it is noted for an Oktoberfest celebration based on the beer festival of Munich, Germany. During World War I the city's residents renamed it after the British war hero Horatio H. Kitchener to demonstrate support for Canada and Great Britain.
