Kingfisher



Kingfisher, family (Alcedinidae) of brightly colored, strong-beaked birds of rivers, lakes, and streams worldwide. The bird perches until prey is sighted, then dives arrowlike into the water to take the fish. The belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) is the only species widely found in the United States.
