Kiev



Kiev (pop. 2,600,000), capital and largest city of Ukraine, on the Dnieper River. Founded before the 9th century, it was the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church from 988. More than 40% of Kiev was destroyed in World War II, but after extensive reconstruction it is now an industrial, communications, and cultural center.
