Kiel Canal

Kiel Canal, German canal extending 61 mi (98 km) from the mouth of the Elbe River to Holtenau near Kiel. It opened in 1895 to facilitate movement of the German fleet between the North and Baltic seas. Because of its military and commercial value, it was internationalized after World War I until Hitler denied its status in 1936.
