Khartoum



Khartoum (pop. 557,000), capital of Sudan. It is a cotton trading center linked by rail and river to Egypt and Port Sudan, and headquarters for the Bank for African Development, linking North and South Africa economically. The city was founded in 1821 as an Egyptian army camp. British General Gordon was killed here in 1885 defending the city against the Muslim religious leader known as the Mahdi.
