Stan Kenton

Kenton, Stan (1912–79), U.S. bandleader, pianist, and composer. Kenton experimented with the size and concept of his bands and sometimes combined Afro-Cuban music, modern jazz, and classical music. He introduced a brass instrument called the mellophonium, with a range between the trumpet and the trombone. His compositions include “Artistry in Rhythm” and “Eager Beaver.” He helped establish the careers of jazz greats Lee Konitz and Art Pepper on alto saxophone, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, drummer Shelly Manne, and trombonist Kai Winding.
