Estes Kefauver



Kefauver, Estes (1903–63), U.S. Democratic senator from Tennessee, known for his investigations into organized crime. He studied law at Yale, supported Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and entered Congress in 1939, becoming a senator 10 years later. In 1952 Adlai Stevenson defeated Kefauver for the Democratic presidential nomination, but lost the election to Dwight Eisenhower. In 1956 he was Stevenson's running mate for the presidency, but the Democrats again lost to Eisenhower.
