Karakorum



Karakorum, ancient capital of Genghis Khan's empire. Its ruins, discovered in 1889, stand in what is now the Mongolian People's Republic, on the Orhon River. Established c.1220, it fell into decay by the 16th century. Marco Polo visited Karakorum c.1275.
