Juana Inés de la Cruz

Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651–95), Mexican-Spanish poet and scholar. As a girl she left court to become a nun. Criticized for her “unwomanly” studies, she defended women's education in a vigorous letter to her bishop (1691). Her lyric poems, especially the sonnets, are among the finest in Spanish. She died nursing epidemic victims in Mexico City.
