Chief Joseph

Joseph, Chief (Hinmaton-Yalaktit; c.1840–1904), leader of the Nez Percé, a Native American tribe. He non-violently resisted the forced resettlement of his people under a treaty fraudulently obtained by the United States in 1863. In 1877, when fighting broke out, he led a 1,000-mi (1,609-km) mass flight from Oregon to Canada. The Nez Percé were defeated only 30 mi (48 km) from the border. Joseph lived out his life on Colville Reservation in Washington.
