Joseph Eggleston Johnston



Johnston, Joseph Eggleston (1807–91), Confederate general, credited with the victory at Bull Run in 1861. Wounded at Fair Oaks, he was relieved of command in 1864 after a feud with Jefferson Davis; he returned to command in 1865 but had to surrender to Gen. Sherman after 2 months. In 1879–81 he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
