John III Sobieski (1624–96), late-17th-century king of Poland. Ascending to the throne in 1674 during a time of frequent wars and civil unrest, Sobieski united the Polish people against the incursions of their warlike neighbors and led a Christian army to victory over Turks outside the gates of Vienna in 1683.
