Johannesburg



Johannesburg (pop. 704,000), city in northeastern South Africa. It is the hub of a prosperous mining region, with the world's largest gold field, the Witwatersand, nearby. First settled by prospectors in 1886, Johannesburg is South Africa's largest metropolitan area and a thriving cultural, commercial, and industrial center.
