Jersey City



Jersey City (pop. 224,400), city in northeastern New Jersey, seat of Hudson County. Located across the Hudson River from Manhattan, Jersey City is a major transportation center with extensive port facilities, several major railways, and tunnel and ferry connections with New York City. Its industries include shipping, oil refining, chemicals, and the manufacture of consumer products. The city is also the site of a stockyard. First settled by the Dutch in 1618, it became the town of Jersey in 1804 and was incorporated as a city in 1820.
