Jenne

Jenne, or Djenné, city in southern Mali. Founded c.1300 in a swampy lowland between the Niger and Bani rivers, Jenne became a trade hub between the West African coastal region and the lower Sahara. In 1468 it was conquered by the Songhai Empire, and in the mid-1600s it was a focal point for black Muslim culture and learning.
