Jefferson Territory

Jefferson Territory, area comprising what is now the state of Colorado and parts of Utah, Nebraska, and Kansas. Thousands of settlers came to the area in 1859 after rumors that gold had been discovered there. A provisional government was established, but Congress refused to recognize the Jefferson Territory as a state.
