James River



James River, river in Virginia, formed by the confluence of the Jackson and Cowpasture rivers and flowing east and southeast past Lynchburg and Richmond to Chesapeake Bay. About 340 mi (547 km) long, it is navigable for about 150 mi (241 km) between Richmond and the bay.
