Jackson, Shirley (1919–65), U.S. author. Her best-known works, such as The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and the short story “The Lottery” (1948), blend Gothic horror with psychological insight. Autobiographical works, such as Raising Demons (1957), are in a contrastingly humorous vein.
