Independence



Independence (pop. 111,806), city in Missouri, seat of Jackson County. Located about 10 mi (16 km) east of Kansas City, Independence is largely a residential suburb. Its industries include oil refining and the manufacture of cement, plastics, and farm machinery. Founded in 1827, it was the site of a Mormon colony from 1831 to 1834, and is now the headquarters of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The home of former President Harry S. Truman, it is the site of the Harry S. Truman Library.
