Imagists

Imagists, group of poets writing in the early 20th century in the United States and England who rebelled against the artificiality and sentimentality of much 19th-century poetry. Free, idiomatic verse, unusual rhythms, and sharp, clear imagery were characteristics of their work, which was influenced by French symbolism. The movement embraced Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), Amy Lowell, D.H. Lawrence, and James Joyce.
