Hydroxide

Hydroxide, chemical compound containing the negatively charged hydroxyl ion (OH-), used in the manufacture of detergents and medicines. Most hydroxide compounds are water soluble and can be caustic to varying degrees. Household ammonia is a familiar example of a basic hydroxide. Hydroxides are inorganic compounds; organic compounds containing the hydroxyl ion are called alcohols.
