Hubert Horatio Humphrey



Humphrey, Hubert Horatio (1911–78), U.S. political leader, vice president from 1965 to 1969. A Democrat, he was mayor of Minneapolis, then was elected senator from Minnesota in 1948. Identified with many liberal causes, as vice president under Lyndon Johnson he nonetheless supported U.S. Vietnam policy. Unsuccessful as the Democratic candidate for president (1968), he returned to the Senate (1970).
