Hudson River tunnels

Hudson River tunnels, 7 underwater commuter tunnels extending under the Hudson River and linking New York City's Manhattan Island and New Jersey. The Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation (PATH) operates 4 rapid transit tunnels, all over 5,000 ft (1,500 m) long. Passenger trains pass through Amtrak's Hudson River Tunnel, and motor vehicles travel via the Holland or Lincoln tunnels. Before 1900, when the first tunnels were built, people traveling between Manhattan and New Jersey were required to ferry across the Hudson River.
