Edwin Powell Hubble



Hubble, Edwin Powell (1889–1953), U.S. astronomer who first showed (1923) that certain nebulae are in fact galaxies outside the Milky Way. By examining the red shifts in their spectra, he showed that they are receding at rates proportional to their distances.
