Howard University



Howard University, private, coeducational institution in Washington, D.C., established in 1867 to educate newly freed slaves. The university includes 17 schools and colleges and 12 research centers and institutes and maintains the most extensive library collection of materials on African American life in the United States. Howard admits all students, but has a special responsibility, dating to its founding, to educate black students.
