Hostage

Hostage, traditionally, a person delivered as a token of good faith; now hostages are more often kidnapped and tortured by political dissidents demanding concessions. Iran's taking of U.S. hostages (1979), with demands for the return of their deposed Shah, resulted in a major crisis for President Jimmy Carter's administration. A UN treaty outlawing the taking of hostages went into effect in 1983.
