John Bell Hood



Hood, John Bell (1831–79), Confederate general in the U.S. Civil War, a commander in the second Battle of Bull Run, the battle of Gettysburg, and in the resistance to General William Sherman's drive on Atlanta (1864). Disastrously defeated at the battle of Nashville (Dec. 1864), he was relieved of his command at his own request.
