Hoffmann, E(rnst) T(heodor) A(madeus) (1776–1822), German romantic author, composer, and critic. He is best remembered today for his fantastic short stories,which inspired E.A. Poe and others, and the opera Tales of Hoffmann, composed by J.L. Offenbach and based on 3 of his stories.
