S(usan) E(loise) Hinton



Hinton, S(usan) E(loise) (1948– ), U.S. author of books for teenagers. Her novels are set in Tulsa, Okla., where Hinton was born and raised. Her characters, often teenagers themselves, reject authority and must cope with the problems of poverty, drug abuse, and violence on their own. Hinton's first and most widely recognized novel, The Outsiders (1967), written when she was 16, is noted for its action and harshly realistic characters. Her other works include That Was Then, This Is Now (1971), Rumble Fish (1975), and Tex (1979).
