Hideyoshi (Toyotomi Hideyoshi; 1536–98), Japanese military leader and dictator (1585–98). He served as a general in the army under the dictator Nobunga. As ruler of Japan, Hideyoshi brought order to the country following a civil war and formed alliances that enabled him to defeat all opposition to his rule. His attempts to conquer Korea were unsuccessful. He beautified his capital, Osaka, and made it a cultural center.
