Joseph Hewes



Hewes, Joseph (1730–79), American patriot. He represented North Carolina as a delegate to the Continental Congresses of 1774–77 and 1779 and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As the first head of the U.S. Navy, his most famous act was the appointment of John Paul Jones as an officer.
