Heraldry



Heraldry, system of devising designs or insignia displayed on shields or coats of arms to identify individuals, families, towns, universities, military regiments, or nations. Heralds of the Middle Ages announced tournaments and became expert in identifying the armorial bearings of the participants. The origins of heraldry is uncertain but may have begun in 12th century Germany. Heraldry proliferated throughout Europe due to the popularity of tournaments which attracted Knights from many regions of Europe.
