Matthew Alexander Henson



Henson, Matthew Alexander (1866–1955), African-American Arctic explorer who, with Robert Peary, discovered the North Pole in 1909. He had already accompanied Peary to the Arctic 7 times. He served as clerk in the U.S. Customs House in New York City, 1913–36.
