John Henry

Henry, John, African American folk hero. The subject of many stories and songs, he was a railroad worker in West Virginia in the 1870s who staged a one-man race against a experimental steam drill. Although he won the race, he was reportedly crushed by a falling rock. In the popular folk ballad, John Henry died from exhaustion. The legend of John Henry symbolizes the worker's struggle against replacement by machines.
