Robert Henri



Henri, Robert (Robert Henry Cozad; 1865–1929), U.S. painter and art teacher, founder of the Ashcan School of realistic painters. He studied and traveled in Europe, 1888–1900, then taught in New York, where he organized the 1908 exhibition of The Eight. His philosophy is expressed in his widely read book The Art Spirit (1923).
