Heller, Joseph (1923– ), U.S. novelist and playwright best known for Catch-22 (1961), a grotesquely humorous novel about a U.S. bombardier's “deep-seated survival anxieties” during World War II. Other satiric works include the play We Bombed in New Haven (1967) and the novels Good as Gold (1979) and God Knows (1984).
