Hel



Hel, in Scandanavian and early German mythology, cruel, greedy goddess of the dead, ruler of the underworld (Niflheim), and daughter of the evil Loki. The underworld itself became known as Hel and, eventually, as a place of punishment like the hell of Christian belief.
